Sports

Celebrate Wirral logo

Wirral has a very strong sporting tradition with clubs, associations and organisations representing pretty much any sport that you care to mention - we could always be proved wrong I guess. Is there a Wirral Pelota League?

With names ranging from the very obvious Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park to the Wirral Sunday League, to Chris Boardman our cycling Olympic Gold medallist through to Wirral's six-a-side beach football tournament which, this year, attracted a record number of 230 teams, competitive and recreational sport is thriving in Wirral. We have sports and leisure centres, numerous golf courses which at the moment are coming increasingly into focus as result of Wirral hosting the 2006 Open Golf Championships, not to forget pitch and putt in parks and on New Brighton promenade. Sailing is very popular. Being surrounded by water probably has a bearing on that but Cycling clubs are strongly represented as is Wirral Chess League, not to forget boxing. Do we know how many people go Orienteering in Wirral? I'm sure someone around here has the answer to that question.

To help with as much info as possible we will develop this page as a point of reference to links with sporting clubs, organisations and venues so please let us know who you are, what you do, where you do it and how people can contact you. In the meantime we'll try to find the answer to the Orienteering question (unless an Orienteerer gets to us first!)! If you're interested contact us and let's make a difference!
