Audio Description North West

North West Disability Arts Forum in association with Mind's Eye Professional Description Service, Arts Council England North West and the Library Theatre, Manchester, are offering subsidised places on a new training course in Audio Description to be held in Manchester in June and July 2005.

Audio Description is a growing profession providing access to the arts for people who are blind or visually impaired. In the theatre the audio describer provides an introduction to the visual elements of the production plus a touch tour of the set and costumes prior to the performance. During the performance the audio describer weaves the description around the dialogue, music and songs to ensure that the listener is told about the sets, costumes, facial expressions, gestures, dances, fights, chases and other visual elements of the show.

Developed and run by the Audio Description Association, the course is accredited by the Open College Network and leads to the Certificate in Audio Description Skills, which is the nationally recognised qualification for audio describers in the UK. It will offer trainees the chance to learn and develop the core skills required for work in Audio Description in theatre, museums and galleries, film and television.

Anne Hornsby is the main trainer on the course. Anne is one of this country's leading audio describers having worked in this field for over 15 years. She is currently Chair of the Audio Description Association and works all over the country in theatre, film and the visual arts.

The course is open to anyone living in the Arts Council North West region, with a good command of English, a pleasant speaking voice and good sight and hearing.

An information and audition day will be held on the 5th June. Course dates will be June 18th and 19th, July 16th and 17th, and July 30th. A second course, also for new audio describers, is planned for later in the year to take place in Liverpool.

Applications for the course are available from NWDAF by email audiodescription@nwdaf.co.uk or by post from NWDAF, 1-27 Bridport Street, Liverpool, L3 5QF. Telephone 0151 707 1733, Fax 0151 708 9355, Minicom 0151 706 0365
